The Honourable Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Pam Parsons, Minister Responsible for the Office of Women and Gender Equality, hosted another meeting of the Premier’s Roundtable on Gender Equity today (Wednesday, September 29).
The Roundtable on Gender Equity provides an opportunity to identify gender equity issues, provide context and help shape solutions that create and foster inclusion and respect.
The Premier’s Roundtable on Gender Equity is outcome focused, multi-departmental and composed of key Indigenous leaders, opposition parties, community stakeholders and advocates, and those with lived experience.
Building on the ‘Barriers to Gender Equity Feedback Report’ drafted following the last meeting, today’s session considered Gender-Based Analysis Plus, the Safe and Caring Schools Policy and Gender Responsive Standards of Practice – Mental Health and Addictions.
The Premier’s Roundtable on Gender Equity will meet again early in 2022.
Quotes
“Systemic issues cannot be solved overnight, nor do I believe they can be solved by a single entity. Gender equity cannot, and will not, be achieved if we do not break down silos. Just as the gender equity issues are intricately interwoven with other issues, so too will be the solutions. I thank the members of the Roundtable for their passion, determination and commitment to making Newfoundland and Labrador a better place.”
Honourable Andrew Furey
Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador
“The evidence is clear that when individuals are relatively equal, economies tend to grow faster, the less fortunate move more quickly out of poverty, and the well-being of all genders is enhanced. Addressing gender equity issues will advance the social, economic, cultural, and legal status of all people in our province making a better Newfoundland and Labrador for us all.”
