The Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture today announced details of moose and caribou quota allocations for the 2021-22 big game hunting season.
For 2021-2022, there are 28,324 moose licences available on the Island of Newfoundland – an overall increase of 369 licences. This includes 17,890 either-sex licences and 9,959 male licences, with 475 of the total licences allocated to not-for-profit groups. Regional moose population trends on the Island this year have generally resulted in fewer allocations for Moose Management Areas (MMAs) in Eastern Newfoundland, and increased allocations for MMAs in Western Newfoundland. In Labrador, the moose quota has not changed, with 384 either-sex moose licences available.
The number of available caribou licences for the Island in 2021-22 remains the same at 575, including 380 either-sex licences and 195 male licences.
All moose and caribou quotas were determined using the best available scientific information obtained by wildlife officials during recent field surveys and research studies. Big game applications for the 2021-22 season will be mailed to all eligible hunters beginning today (Wednesday, April 7). Applications can be submitted online via the Wildlife Information Management System, returned by mail, or faxed to 709-637-2099.
Eligible applicants who require further assistance can call 709-637-2025 or 709-729-2630, or email wildlifelicense@gov.nl.ca. Applications for the moose and caribou eligibility draw must be received by 4:30 p.m. Newfoundland Standard Time on Friday, April 30, 2021.
For more information regarding season and application dates, quota allocations, and moose and caribou population estimates, please view the 2021-2022 Hunting and Trapping Guide.
Resident moose quota allocations were not impacted by the recently announced carryover of 25 per cent of unsold 2020 non-resident moose licences for the 2021 hunting season. Additional licences in 2021 are possible because of the low harvest by non-residents in 2020.
Quote
“Each year thousands of resident and non-resident hunters look forward to the opportunity to participate in the world-class hunting experiences Newfoundland and Labrador has to offer. The 2021-22 quota allocations for moose and caribou are based on current survey data collected by wildlife officials, which is vital in helping support the sustainable management of our province’s wildlife resources for our long-term enjoyment.”
