July 14, 2021

The Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture’s 2021 Spruce Budworm Early Intervention Program is now complete. The program was carried out over the past month to help prevent future outbreaks of the destructive insect and reduce the need for treatment programs in coming years.

Treatments took place on 138,500 hectares of forest located south of the Bay of Islands and on the Northern Peninsula, including areas adjacent to Gros Morne National Park. The department has also completed a small spruce budworm early intervention strategy research program on approximately 450 hectares of mature forest near North Lake and Bonne Bay Big Pond.

Maps of treated locations can be viewed at the department’s Forest Insect Control Program webpage.

Insect surveys of treated areas planned for this fall will assess the effectiveness of this year’s spruce budworm early intervention strategy efforts.
