  • Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture

August 20, 2021

The Resource Enforcement Division of the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture is seeking information related to the recent, illegal harvest of a moose on the old rail bed near the weigh scales east of Goobies.

Officers responded to the area on August 18, 2021, locating the front half of a moose carcass on the rail bed. It is believed the animal was killed during the late hours of August 17 or into the early morning hours of August 18.

It is an offence under the Wild Life Act to harvest a big game animal out of season and without a licence. The big game hunting season opens on August 28 for bow hunting and September 11 for firearms.

If charged and subsequently convicted for a first offence, the maximum penalty for hunting during a closed season is $5,000, imprisonment of up to six months, or both, and prohibition from holding a big game licence for five years from the date of conviction.

Investigators are encouraging persons with information, or anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area between August 17 and 18, to contact the Resource Enforcement Division at 709-729-2192. Calls can also be made anonymously, 24/7, by calling toll-free 1-877-820-0999 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Anonymous reports can also be submitted online at www.stoppoaching.ca  or www.nlcrimestoppers.com.
