The opening of the 2021-22 hunting season for big game rifle hunting in Newfoundland and Labrador begins Saturday, September 11. The big game bow-hunting season opened on August 28.

A total of 28,324 moose licences have been awarded on the Island, including 17,890 either sex and 9,959 male only, and 475 licences issued to not-for-profit groups.  In Labrador, 384 either sex moose licences have been issued.

For caribou hunters, there are 575 licences available on the Island only. Caribou hunting is prohibited in Labrador.

All hunters are reminded that firearms and hunting safety must be observed at all times, particularly when travelling the province’s roadways, and spending time in the outdoors. Additional information related to wildlife regulations, hunting season dates, bag limits and other hunting safety reminders, is available in the 2021-22 Hunting and Trapping Guide. All hunters are strongly encouraged to review the guide prior to the start of hunting season.

Hunters are reminded to drop off big game jawbones at one of the more than 50 locations in the province and receive a Cooperating Hunter Crest for your support of important big game population studies and research.
