October 29, 2021

The Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture is extending the deadline date for completion of the Firearms Safety–Hunter Education training course required for new applicants wishing to enter the 2022-2023 big game licence draw.

The deadline date has been changed from November 30, 2021 to January 30, 2022 due to delays with scheduled general course offerings and programs stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Completion of the Firearms Safety–Hunter Education training courses is required to be certified to hunt with a firearm or archery equipment in Newfoundland and Labrador.  Courses are presently being offered at select College of the North Atlantic campuses, and other locations throughout the province.

The Canadian Firearms Safety Course teaches the basics of firearms safety and the laws related to firearms storage, handling and transportation while the Hunter Education Course provides important information related to wildlife conservation and management, hunting laws, hunter ethics and responsibility, outdoor safety, survival techniques and other useful hunting skills.

Interested individuals are encouraged to visit the College of the North Atlantic website or call 1-888-982-2268 for additional course and registration information.  Additional information is also available in the 2021-2022 Hunting and Trapping Guide.

The department is planning online course options which are expected to be available in 2022.

The public is also reminded Firearms Safety–Hunter Education courses for individuals wishing to become eligible for hunting small game species are offered throughout the year.
