Big game hunters throughout the province are encouraged to submit moose and caribou jawbones to the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture to support important wildlife studies and research.
The Big Game Jawbone Collection Program provides wildlife biologists with valuable data that can be used to determine the health of moose and caribou populations.
Hunters are reminded a properly cleaned jawbone is important for obtaining accurate data. Before submitting a jawbone be sure to adhere to the following guidelines:
- Remove as much skin and flesh as possible.
- Keep in a well-ventilated, cool area.
- Do not wrap in plastic to avoid the growth of bacteria.
- Firmly attach the jawbone tag before submitting, and remember to punch out the tab that indicates the sex of the animal harvested.
The department has set up over 50 jawbone drop box locations throughout the province.
Each hunter that submits a jawbone will receive a ‘Cooperating Big Game Hunter’ crest to acknowledge their contribution to the program.
