Public Advisory: Motorists Warned to be Aware of Caribou on West Coast Highways

  • Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture

December 22, 2021

Motorists are being encouraged to be vigilant when travelling in Western Newfoundland on the Trans-Canada Highway in the area between the Burgeo Highway intersection and the end of highway moose fencing, and on Route 460 (White’s Road).

A significant number of caribou are currently active in these areas making them vulnerable to vehicular traffic. These animals are expected to remain in the region throughout the winter.

Motorists can reduce the risk of a caribou-vehicle collision by:

  • Scanning both sides of the highway;
  • Paying attention to caribou warning signs;
  • Avoiding driving at dusk and dawn when caribou are more common alongside roadways;
  • Having passengers also watch for caribou; and
  • Reducing speeds when driving at night when caribou are more difficult to see.
