Residents of Newfoundland and Labrador are encouraged to participate and complete their 2021 Census. The national census helps paint a portrait of Canada’s diverse population and the communities Canadians call home.
The census collects information about every person in the country and the results are important to Canada, as well as Newfoundland and Labrador. Funding formulas for major federal transfer payments to provinces, like the health and social transfers this province receives, are based, in part, on population counts. As a result, every person not included in the census may result in less federal revenue to the province and, therefore, lower funding for the programs and services that residents depend on.
Newfoundland and Labrador uses census information in planning and monitoring programs in areas such as health care, education and social programs. Census information is also essential when planning roads, waterworks, public transit, and police and fire services. In addition, town planners use census data on households and families to plan current and future housing needs and municipal infrastructure.

Quote
“We all recognize that our communities are changing and census data helps us understand the demographic, social and economic information we need to address those changes. Information from the 2021 Census will be even more crucial than ever because it will help evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and help us better plan for the future. I urge every resident of Newfoundland and Labrador to participate in the Census so we can better understand their needs and map out a better future that is reflective of our unique province and its dynamic people.”
