Public Advisory: Adverse Weather Conditions Anticipated

February 2, 2021

The Provincial Government is monitoring forecast information on an approaching weather system anticipated to affect the province beginning tomorrow and continuing throughout the day.

Environment Canada has advised that a deep low pressure system will pass west of the island on Wednesday, February 3. Snow will develop across the island tonight or Wednesday, before transitioning through freezing rain or ice pellets to rain throughout the day.

Strong southeasterly winds can be expected across the island, and higher than normal water levels across a portion of the south coast near Wednesday’s high tide. This storm will bring more significant snowfall and strong easterly winds to coastal and central Labrador.

There is a low probability of coastal flooding due to wave inundation and storm surge; areas most at risk are low-lying coastal areas exposed to the southeast, with highest chance of flooding likely near Wednesday high tide (early afternoon).

Residents are asked to take steps to ensure their own personal safety. Residents should always have a basic emergency kit available and be prepared for at least 72 hours, with food, water, batteries, a portable radio, and prescription medications.

Visit gov.nl.ca/beprepared for more information on emergency preparedness.

Municipalities and local service districts should monitor coastal infrastructure.

Regional forecast information is available from Environment Canada.
