The Honourable Krista Lynn Howell, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, today congratulated newly elected councilors and mayors in the 2021 municipal elections, as well as all those who put their names forward to serve their communities. The elections took place across Newfoundland and Labrador on September 28.
Minister Howell also acknowledged the work of municipal officials who play a central role in organizing and ensuring successful elections, with having to prepare for and provide a mail-in option for voters more than ever before.
This year, there was an overall increase of 2.8 per cent in nominations compared to the previous election in 2017, with 39 per cent identifying as female, an increase from 33 per cent in 2017. Detailed data on the election results is being gathered by the Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs and will be released in the coming days.
