A contract valued at $1.3 million has been awarded to Redwood Construction Limited for further renovations to the Colonial Building Provincial Historic Site.

Renovations include interior trim and surface repair/reinstatement on all levels of the Colonial Building, including some electrical upgrades and work on the stairs connecting the ground level and level one. These renovations are expected to be complete in September 2021.

The Colonial Building was one of the finest structures in North America when opened in 1850 and was the seat of our legislature for more than a century. The building still retains many of its original elements.

The investment in this comprehensive restoration project will enable the building to return to its historical design prominence. Once completed, the Colonial Building will again be a living building that explores the past and present need to have our collective and individual voices heard – through an interpretive approach that includes tours, exhibits, programming, educational offerings, public dialogues, and debates.

Quotes
“The Colonial Building was built over 170 years ago and is one of the most important structures still standing in the province. As with any restoration of historical structures, attention to detail is critical and work requires much more time to complete than a modern building. While there is still more work to be completed, we are much closer to the finish and look forward to the completion of this significant project and re-opening the restored building to the public.”
Honourable Bernard Davis
Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation

“While we make investments to build new buildings and maintain our public buildings, such as our schools, municipal infrastructure and healthcare facilities, it’s also important that we invest in the Colonial Building to protect one of our province’s most historic structures for future generations.”
Honourable Derrick Bragg
Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure
