Provincial Government Seeking Submissions for Multi-Year Roads Plan

December 17, 2021

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is seeking public input for highway construction projects for its Multi-Year Provincial Roads Plan.

The questionnaire is available at Engagenl.ca and residents can submit suggestions until January 17, 2022

Submissions will collect information on region, route name or number, the nearest municipality or landmark, and the type of issue being experienced.

The responses will be used along with input from the department’s engineers to develop a new Multi-Year Roads Plan to be issued in 2022 ahead of the 2022-23 road construction season.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is responsible for the maintenance of almost 10,000 kilometres of highway and more than 1,300 bridges and large culverts. As such, there can be a considerable demand for infrastructure repair and improvements all across the province.

Road projects to be included in the roads plan are evaluated and prioritized based on safety, traffic volumes, socio-economic impacts, input from the general public, and assessments by the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s engineers.

More than 700 lane kilometres of roads have were paved in the 2021 highway construction season in addition to six bridges being replaced and 27 bridges being rehabilitated.

The department received 422 responses to its 2020 consultation and 227 submissions to its consultation in 2019.

Quote
“This consultation for the Multi-Year Roads Plan gives residents the opportunity to inform the department about the necessary road work in their region of the province. Along with the expertise of our engineers, this information helps us plan for our road construction season. I have driven many areas of the province this summer to see first-hand the conditions of our highways and I look forward to issuing a new roads plan in early 2022.”
Honourable Elvis Loveless
Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure
