Today, the Honourable John G. Abbott, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, is recognizing June as Seniors’ Month.
Throughout their lifetimes, seniors have experienced both achievements and challenges that have provided them with great insight and wisdom. They are tremendous leaders, and community members, whose inspiring natures are a key to the past, present and future.
To help distinguish the contributions of seniors throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, please take the time to nominate a senior to become a 2022 Senior of Distinction. More information on these awards and the nomination package can be obtained online or by calling toll free 1-888-494-2266.The deadline for submissions is June 6, 2022.
Minister Abbott also proclaims today (June 1) as Intergenerational Day Canada and shares in the celebration of intergenerational connections. This occasion provides the opportunity to encourage and engage in intergenerational activities that help to bridge generations and break through isolation and loneliness in an effort to move towards more healthy and age-friendly communities.
Furthermore, June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, which is a time to reflect on shared responsibilities as individuals, families, communities and a province to raise awareness about elder abuse. To report adult abuse or neglect, please call 1-855-376-4957.
