Beginning today (Monday, February 28), big game licence draw applications for 2022 are being accepted online through the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture Wildlife Information Management System (WIMS) website. The online application process is scheduled to remain open until April 29, 2022, an increase in duration of the application window from four weeks in previous years to nine weeks.
For the island of Newfoundland a moose quota of 27,665 licenses has been established for 2022. This includes: 17,850 Either Sex, 9,360 Male Only and 455 Not-For-Profit (NFP) licences. In Labrador, the overall quota of moose licences available for the resident big game draw remains at 345 licences. A video featuring Dr. Blair Adams of the Wildlife Division providing more information about this year’s moose quotas as well as changes to the 2022-23 big game management plan is available here.
Starting this year, the big game licence application process has shifted to a primarily online service, requiring all hunters to set up a WIMS online account. The transition to primarily an online service is expected to reduce delays and improve efficiency in the management and operation of the application process.
In preparation for the receipt of big game applications for the 2022 big game hunting season, detailed account set-up instructions were recently mailed to all hunters who do not currently have a WIMS online account. The mail out document contains a detailed step-by-step guide describing how to set up an online WIMS account. In addition to the mail out document, an instructional video outlining each step can be viewed here.
Individuals with computer access concerns or who reside in areas with limited internet access should contact the Wildlife Division to arrange for alternative big game licence draw application options by calling 709-637-2025 or 709-729-2630 or emailing wildlifelicence@gov.nl.ca.
In conjunction with the opening of the 2022 big game draw application process, the 2022-2023 Hunting and Trapping Guide is now available for viewing on the department website. The guide contains valuable information including hunting season dates, hunter safety recommendations and new information and regulations for the upcoming hunting season. All hunters and trappers are encouraged to review the guide before engaging in hunting activity this year.
