Public Advisory: Wildlife Enforcement Officials Seeking Information on Moose Poaching Incident in the Castors River Area

The Resource Enforcement Division of the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture is seeking information related to a moose poaching incident in the Castors River area.

Resource Enforcement Officers responding to a tip from the public recently located a moose kill site on the Castors River Resource Road at a location north of Reefs Harbour Junction. Officers initiated an investigation, which determined a moose had been taken illegally and collected evidence from the area. It is believed the moose was poached sometime between February 11 and February 13, 2022.

Anyone with information that may lead to the identity of the person or persons involved in this incident is asked to contact the Resource Enforcement Division’s Roddickton Detachment at 709-457-3015. Information can also be provided anonymously at any time, by calling 1-877-820-0999 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. Anonymous reports can also be submitted online at www.nlcrimestoppers.com or www.stoppoaching.ca.

It is an offence under the Wild Life Act to harvest a big game animal out of season, without a licence or in an area that is not open to hunting. If charged and subsequently convicted for a first offence, the maximum fine is $5,000, imprisonment of up to six months, or both, and prohibition from holding a big game licence for five years.
