February 3, 2022

The Provincial Government is monitoring forecast information on an approaching weather system that is anticipated to affect much of the province. The system is expected to affect the island on Friday through Saturday (February 4 and 5). Labrador is being warned of extreme cold, where wind chills could reach up to -50 degrees, tonight through Friday morning.

Environment Canada is warning of heavy rain mixed with freezing rain and ice pellets across the Avalon and Burin Peninsulas with upwards of 135 mm in some areas. The western, central and northern regions of the island could see significant amounts of snow with up to 60 cm in some areas.

We encourage residents to monitor the forecast for the most up-to-date information. Regional forecast information is available from Environment Canada.

As always, the public and local governments are reminded to:

  • Ensure roads, ditches and drains are clear of debris;
  • Check NL 511 via the mobile app, visit nl511.ca or call 511 to check driving condition reports;
  • Review and have ready emergency plans; and
  • Take steps to ensure personal safety during the weather event.

Visit Be Prepared for more information on emergency preparedness.
