February 17, 2022

The Provincial Government is monitoring forecast information on an approaching weather system anticipated to affect the province beginning tonight (Thursday, February 17) and continuing through Saturday.

Environment Canada has issued weather warnings for the island portion of the province. Significant snow, rain and freezing rain is expected along with strong winds and potential coastal flooding from large waves and storm surges. The rain combined with mild temperatures could lead to significant snowmelt meaning localized flooding is likely. Southeastern Labrador is being warned of heavy snowfall with blowing snow, which could lead to reduced visibility.

We encourage residents to monitor the forecast for the most up-to-date information. Regional forecast information is available from Environment Canada.

As always, the public and local governments are reminded to:

  • Ensure roads, ditches and drains are clear of debris;
  • Check NL 511 via the mobile app, visit ca or call 511 to check driving condition reports;
  • Review and have ready emergency plans;
  • Monitor coastal infrastructure;
  • Ensure sump pumps are in working order; and,
  • Take steps to ensure personal safety during the weather event.
