The Honourable Pam Parsons, Minister Responsible for Women and Gender Equality, today (September 28) hosted a Youth Leadership Event at Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts to showcase non-traditional career options available to young people who are approaching graduation.

The panel discussion featured input from the community sector, oceans industry, and the skilled trades. Panelists included Stacy Harris, Executive Director of Communities Against Violence; David Tipton, Program Manager of the Ocean Careers Immersion Project with OceansAdvance; and Mary Ford, Outreach Manager with the Office to Advance Women Apprentices.

Panelists were able to share personal experiences from their sector, and spoke to the challenges and many opportunities that young people face as they begin to explore post-secondary career paths.

The Office of Women and Gender Equality undertakes initiatives to encourage, promote, support and retain women and gender-diverse people in leadership roles. These initiatives also connect closely to the economic participation of women and gender-diverse people throughout the province.

Quote
“In the past, women and gender-diverse people have faced barriers entering into and advancing within some career paths. It is vital that we connect young people to jobs and industries that they may not have considered before. Youth are the future of our province, and it is important that we support them in exploring every career that they may choose as a viable path in the future.”
