October is National Foster Families Month in Newfoundland and Labrador, an opportunity to celebrate and recognize foster families for their dedication and commitment to children and youth in care. This year’s theme is “Foster Families: Nurturing Hearts and Strengthening Families.”
In Newfoundland and Labrador, there are approximately 580 foster families providing safe and nurturing homes to children and youth who are experiencing complex and challenging circumstances.
The Honourable Paul Pike, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, was pleased to participate in a proclamation signing and flag-raising ceremony today at Confederation Building in St. John’s to celebrate National Foster Families Month. Minister Pike was joined by Kelli Hodder, Executive Director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Foster Families Association, the association’s staff and board members, as well as foster parents and departmental staff. The ceremony also included performances by the Stella’s Circle Inclusion Choir and Inuit throat singers.
The Provincial Government values the important work of the Newfoundland and Labrador Foster Families Association. In collaboration with the department, the association continues to encourage, recruit and support foster parents throughout the province. During this month, the association is holding training sessions and networking activities for foster families in Newfoundland and Labrador.
