The Honourable Krista Lynn Howell, Minister of Education, yesterday introduced proposed amendments to the Schools Act, 1997, for second reading in the House of Assembly. If passed, these amendments will enable the transition of the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District into the Provincial Government.
The proposed changes to the Act include:
- Dissolving the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District, its operations and successor in law would move to the Crown;
- Updating powers of the Minister to include regulatory making authority; and
- Removing reference to a board and replacing with the Crown, or the department and the conseil scolaire as applicable.
These proposed changes support the final stages of the integration process as it moves toward completion by the end of 2023.
