With this year’s Terry Fox Day taking place on the cusp on the inaugural Well-Being Week in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Honourable Dr. Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, is encouraging all residents to consider participating in Terry Fox Day events.
The annual Terry Fox Run is set for Sunday, September 17 across the country, including in locations across Newfoundland and Labrador. Participants are encouraged to share photos of their events using the hashtag #DearTerry on social media to show their support for the cause.
Additionally, the Terry Fox School Run takes place on Friday, September 22 in schools country-wide. Educators and families are encouraged to share the Terry Fox story with their children, sharing the message to ‘Try Like Terry’.
Participants run and walk in memory of Terry Fox, one of Canada’s most prolific and iconic people. After being diagnosed with bone cancer in 1977 and having his leg amputated above the knee, Terry saw the suffering of other cancer patients in hospital and set the goal of running across Canada to raise money for cancer research. The Marathon of Hope began and ended in 1980, but not before Terry raised an incredible $24.17 million.
To date, the Terry Fox Foundation has fundraised over $850 million worldwide.
In 2016, the Provincial Government declared the second Sunday after Labour Day ‘Terry Fox Day’ in the province.
Quotes
“Terry Fox’s legacy and influence on Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and all Canadians remains an inspiration. At just 19 years old, Terry taught us all what it means to persevere and to fight for a cause. On Terry Fox Day, I hope all residents of our province consider joining a Terry Fox event in honour of his memory and the memory of all those who have suffered through cancer.”
Honourable Dr. Andrew Furey
Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador
“The Terry Fox Run is a special cause and a great opportunity for people to get moving in their communities. Let’s all aim to ‘Try Like Terry’ on Sunday and participate in this worthwhile event.”
Honourable Steve Crocker
Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation
