Public Advisory: Motorists Encouraged to Watch for Caribou on Western Newfoundland Highways

  • Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture

February 17, 2023

Large numbers of caribou are currently active on roadways in various locations in western Newfoundland. Motorists should be on the lookout for caribou when travelling in the following areas:

  • Route 490 near the former Abitibi Mill Site;
  • Route 460 (White’s Road) between Long Gull Pond and north of Harry’s River; and
  • Trans-Canada Highway near Southwest Brook where highway moose fencing ends.

Motorists can reduce the risk of a caribou-vehicle collision by:

  • Scanning both sides of the highway and having passengers watch for caribou;
  • Paying attention to caribou warning signs;
  • Avoiding driving at dusk and dawn when caribou are commonly alongside roadways; and
  • Reducing speeds while driving at night when caribou are more difficult to see.
