Motorists are being encouraged to be vigilant when travelling on the Trans-Canada Highway approximately 20 kilometers east of Deer Lake in the vicinity of the Deer Lake airport communication beacon.
A significant number of caribou are currently active in this area, crossing the highway and making them vulnerable to vehicular traffic. The animals are expected to remain in the area for several weeks.
Motorists can reduce the risk of a caribou-vehicle collision by:
- Scanning both sides of the highway and having passengers also watch for caribou;
- Paying attention to caribou warning signs;
- Avoiding driving at dusk and dawn when caribou are more common alongside roadways; and
- Reducing speeds when driving at night when caribou are more difficult to see.
