The Provincial Government is pleased to announce the opening of the Big Game season. The season opens in most areas of Newfoundland and Labrador tomorrow (Saturday, September 9):
- Moose (island): September 9, 2023 – December 31, 2023 (except for national parks).
- Moose (Labrador): September 9, 2023 – March 10, 2024.
- Caribou (island): September 9, 2023 – December 3, 2023 (except Areas 70 and 72). Note: Caribou hunting is prohibited in Labrador.
- Black bear (island): September 9, 2023 – November 12, 2023.
- Black bear (Labrador): August 10, 2023 – November 30, 2023.
- Coyotes and wolves: September 9, 2023 – July 15, 2024 (coyote, province-wide). Season dates for wolf vary by region.
- Trapping Seasons and Zones: Trapping dates vary by species and region.
- Small game (island): Trapping dates vary by species and region.
- Small game (Labrador): Trapping dates vary by species and region.
All hunters must observe firearm regulations and safe hunting practices. Wildlife regulations, hunting season dates, bag limits, safety tips and more are available in the 2023-24 Hunting and Trapping Guide. Hunters are strongly encouraged to review the guide prior to the start of hunting season.
Big game jawbones can be returned at more than 50 locations, and participating hunters will receive a Cooperating Hunter Crest for supporting big game population research.
New hunters wishing to become eligible for the 2024-25 Big Game Licence Draw must complete the Canadian Firearms Safety/Hunter Education Course before November 30, 2023.
