The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Immigration, Population Growth and Skills, will launch an extensive suite of supports to help Ukrainians secure long-term housing and employment in Newfoundland and Labrador tomorrow (Wednesday, May 24).
The launch will take place at the Regatta Plaza Employment Centre, 80 Elizabeth Avenue, St. John’s at 11 a.m.
Minister Byrne will be joined by Megan Morris, Executive Director of the Association for New Canadians. Also present will be members of the Ukrainian community and businesses who have hired Ukrainians.
Since the illegal invasion of the Ukraine by Russia on February 24, 2022:
- More than 2,700 Ukrainians have arrived here; almost three-quarters arriving on their own and more coming weekly;
- More than 1,600 Ukrainians are in permanent housing, 296 in the last month;
- More than 280 employers throughout Newfoundland and Labrador have hired almost 600 Ukrainians;
- More than 500 Ukrainian students enrolled in K-12 schools; and
- Nearly 400 Ukrainians are studying English as a Second language.
