Public Advisory: Child Death Review Committee Case Review

Under section 13.5 of the Fatalities Investigations Act, the Minister of Justice and Public Safety is required, within 60 days after receiving a report from the Child Death Review Committee (CDRC), to make public those recommendations relating to:

  • Relevant protocols, policies and procedures;
  • Standards and legislation;
  • Linkages and coordination of services; and
  • Improvements to services affecting children and pregnant women.

The CDRC forwarded a report to the Minister of Justice and Public Safety on August 7, 2023. This report resulted in the following recommendations to the Department of Education:

  • The Department of Education ensure regular and meaningful updates to the Health curricula, in particular the Healthy Living 1200 course, to respond in an effective way to current day issues and challenges for the youth of this province;
  • The course Healthy Living 1200 be mandatory for all students; and
  • The course be updated every two years to ensure it remains relevant.

This report has been forwarded to the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate.
