The Provincial Government extends best wishes to Turkish Newfoundlanders and Labradorians as they commemorate Republic Day on October 29.
This significant holiday marks the declaration of the Turkish Republic by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1923, celebrated with pride through parades, cultural performances, and community gatherings both in Türkiye and among Turkish communities around the world.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador acknowledges the request from the Turkish community in the province to acknowledge this day and the importance of cultural holidays and events that reflect the diversity of all residents. Such celebrations enrich our communities and strengthen the bonds between our cultures.
Newfoundland and Labrador and Türkiye are forever-fused due to events of the First World War and recent bilateral actions have fostered a spirit of shared remembrance and collaboration. In 2023, a monument to the Martyrs of Gallipoli was unveiled at the Trail of the Caribou Memorial Park beside Quidi Vidi Lake in St. John’s. Premier Dr. Andrew Furey, along with dignitaries from Türkiye, commemorated the sacrifice of those who fought for freedom during the First World War. This monument symbolizes the enduring friendship between Newfoundland and Labrador and Türkiye, completing a reciprocal agreement that highlights the shared history and respect for bravery and sacrifice.
