The Provincial Government is calling on all residents to test home smoke alarms on Saturday, September 28, for national Test Your Smoke Alarm Day.
In the event of a fire, the best chance to keep you and your family safe is with a working smoke alarm, and to be “Saved by the Beep”.
“Saved by the Beep” is a national call to action to ensure all smoke alarms in your home are in good working order. In Newfoundland and Labrador, smoke alarms are required to be installed in every room of a residence, including cabins, cottages, RVs, trailers and vacation homes.
Last year, there were approximately 742 reported fire-related incidents in the province, including residential structure fires and electrical fires, with five fire-related deaths.
Test Your Smoke Alarm Day is also a good opportunity to test carbon monoxide detectors. These alarms are designed to alert you of any build-up of carbon monoxide in your home or dwelling.
Contact your local fire department for help or advice with your smoke alarm. To help educate children regarding the importance of a working smoke alarm, and other fire safety tips, visit Sparky the Fire Dog at www.sparky.org for videos, games and other fun activities.
