Public Advisory: Child Death Review Committee Case Review

  • Justice and Public Safety

October 9, 2024

Under section 13.5 of the Fatalities Investigations Act, the Minister of Justice and Public Safety is required, within 60 days after receiving a report from the Child Death Review Committee (CDRC), to make public those recommendations relating to:

  • Relevant protocols, policies and procedures.
  • Standards and legislation.
  • Linkages and coordination of services.
  • Improvements to services affecting children and pregnant women.

The CDRC forwarded a report to the Minister of Justice and Public Safety on August 13, 2024.

This report resulted in the following recommendation:

  • The Child Death Review Committee is concerned with chronic absenteeism in our schools. The recommendations of the 2019 Child and Youth Advocate report Chronic Absenteeism: When Children Disappear have not been fully implemented. The Committee recognizes that the establishment of Education Accord NL creates a forum for transforming and modernizing change to our education system. The Committee recommends that the Department of Education continue with its efforts to implement all the recommendations of the Child and Youth Advocate’s 2019 report and further recommends continued efforts within the proposed Education Accord to resource and address chronic absenteeism.

This report has been forwarded to the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate.
