October 11, 2024

The Honourable Pam Parsons, Minister Responsible for Women and Gender Equality, is today acknowledging October 11 as International Day of the Girl Child. Established by the United Nations in 2011, this day brings attention and awareness to the rights, challenges and potential of girls around the world. It also celebrates the achievements of girls who have overcome adversity and encourages global action towards gender equality.

This year’s theme, Girls’ Vision for the Future, resonates strongly in Newfoundland and Labrador where efforts to empower girls continue to shape a brighter and more equitable future, by ensuring they are free from gender-based violence, have access to education, healthcare, well-being, economic empowerment and leadership opportunities to develop to their full potential.

Quote
“International Day of the Girl Child is a time to recognize the strength, potential and resilience of young girls throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. By empowering them with opportunities and supporting their education, physical and mental health, and human rights, we are not only fostering their success, but also ensuring a brighter and more inclusive future for all of us.”
