Provincial Government Wishes Students Success as a New School Year Begins

The Provincial Government is wishing students success for the new school year, and welcoming teachers, administrators and staff back to schools throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development has worked with the families of students and the teachers and staff who have been affected by the loss of Cabot Academy during the wildfire in Western Bay to ensure that their needs are met to begin the school year. The department will continue to assist families as needed to ensure students have the best educational experience.

An additional 400 educational positions were added to the K-12 system and class sizes from grades 1-9 have decreased. Both initiatives aim to better meet the needs of students and support increased student engagement and achievement in the early grades.

Students in K-12 will be starting at or returning to one of over 250 schools in the province with a team of teachers, administrators, and support staff who are excited to welcome them back.

Community members are encouraged to be mindful on roadways, particularly in school zones, to support the safety of students, staff, and families.

“Today is an exciting day for students, parents, teachers, and staff. Educators have been diligently preparing for a successful year ahead. I know this school year will look different for students, teachers and staff from Cabot Academy, but please know that your new schools are eager to welcome you with open arms. I encourage each student to strive for their best and extend thanks to educators and parents who have helped set the foundation for a positive school year.”
