The Honourable John Hogan, KC, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, joined Canada’s other Premiers for important discussions with Prime Minister Mark Carney at the First Ministers’ Meeting in Saskatoon on Monday, June 2.

First Ministers voiced their collective desire to build a stronger, more resilient Canadian economy. Dialogue focused on shared matters of importance including trade, energy transformation, Canadian sovereignty and security in the Arctic, defence and public safety. Significant discussions were held to accelerate critical infrastructure investments and to streamline the assessment and approval processes for the development of major projects.

Premier Hogan reaffirmed the Provincial Government’s commitment to advancing key initiatives that will bring long-term benefits to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. These include the planned expansion at Churchill Falls and the development of new hydroelectric capacity at Gull Island, and the launch of the Bay du Nord oil and gas project. These projects fit the criteria identified in the federal priority projects legislation and are well-advanced, investment-ready initiatives that can deliver real results for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, and Canadians.

5 Wing Goose Bay was also positioned by Premier Hogan as a strategic location that could offer expanded northern defence capabilities to ensure Arctic security.

The First Ministers’ Meeting concluded with a joint statement underscoring a renewed commitment to national unity and shared prosperity. Provinces, territories, and the Federal Government have agreed to enhance coordination and collaboration on key priorities, including economic growth, trade, and the advancement of critical projects of national interest.

This united approach reflects a collective determination to build a more resilient, inclusive, and forward-looking Canadian economy – one that delivers tangible benefits for all Canadians, in every region of the country.
