Tomorrow, Sunday, September 14, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will join Canadians from coast to coast to coast in celebrating Terry Fox Day – a day to reflect on the courage of a young man whose vision forever changed the fight against cancer. Participants can choose to walk, run or ride in support of the initiative.

Schools across the country will take part in the Terry Fox School Run on Thursday, September 25. In 2024, 177 schools in Newfoundland and Labrador participated, raising a total of $231,000 and inspiring thousands of young students to be changemakers like Terry.

Forty-five years after Terry’s Marathon of Hope, his story continues to unite communities. After losing his leg to bone cancer, Terry set out to run across Canada with the goal of raising money for cancer research.

Here in Newfoundland and Labrador, the community of Port aux Basques helped fuel that vision when residents contributed $10,000 — one dollar for every person in town — an act that inspired Terry to set his nationwide goal.

His journey captured the heart of a nation, raising more than $24 million and inspiring one of the largest grassroots fundraising efforts in the world.

Since the Marathon of Hope, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised more than $900 million for cancer research worldwide, keeping alive Terry’s dream of a world without cancer. In 2016, Newfoundland and Labrador declared the second Sunday after Labour Day as Terry Fox Day.

Quotes
“Terry Fox is one of Canada’s greatest heroes. His courage and determination continue to inspire people across Newfoundland and Labrador, and around the world. On September 14, I encourage people and communities to come together, take part in a Terry Fox Run, and honour his extraordinary legacy.”
Honourable John Hogan, KC
Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

“The Terry Fox Run is about more than fundraising. It’s about community, hope, and perseverance. Terry has had a tremendously wide-reaching impact on Canadians and people around the world, perhaps no one more than the children who are inspired by his story. Let’s come together to remember Terry and raise money for cancer research.”
Honourable Fred Hutton
Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation
