The Provincial Government is reminding the public about an ongoing fraudulent text message scam regarding Motor Registration services that was first reported last week and that it does not communicate information about Motor Registration services through text message.
The text message appears to be issued from the MyGovNL portal and now instructs the recipient to click a link that directs them to a fake website that looks like the Provincial Government website. Once the recipient goes to the fake website, they are asked to provide payment, update their password, or provide personal information.
People who receive the message should not click on any link provided, send payment, reset their password, or share any personal information.
People are encouraged to forward the text message to 7726. This will alert your cellular provider to open an investigation into the contents of the message. For more information on reporting suspicious text messages to 7726, please visit Get Cyber Safe.
People should then delete the text message without responding, block the caller’s number, and report the message to local law enforcement and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
Anyone who has questions about Motor Registration services can visit the website or call toll-free 1-877-636-6867.
