The Department of Families and Affordability and the Department of Justice and Public Safety are developing a decision-making framework to update legislation and policies in the province.
While laws and policies exist to support persons without legal capacity, many do so through imposing guardianship and/or substitute decision-making, which can limit the rights of persons with disabilities to participate in decision-making processes. The goal in developing this framework is to ensure that individuals are accommodated and supported to participate in decision-making processes.
Government will host a series of in-person and virtual sessions in various communities around the province to seek input from the public on the development of the framework. The sessions will run from June 3-June 19.
Further opportunities for input on the Framework of Decision-Making, including an online questionnaire and the option to submit written feedback, will be made available soon.
ASL interpretation and real time captioning will be provided at each session. Disability-related accommodations are available upon request by email at decisionmaking@gov.nl.ca or call 709-729-6279.
All sessions are open to the public and no registration is required.
