On Sunday, June 15, communities across Canada and around the world will mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a global initiative established by the United Nations in 2006 to raise awareness of the mistreatment of older persons and to promote dignity, respect, and safety for all seniors.
Elder abuse can take many forms – including physical, emotional, financial, and neglect – and often goes unreported.
As the population ages, it is more important than ever to recognize the signs of abuse and take action to prevent it. This year’s theme, Empowering Communities: Preventing Elder Abuse Together, highlights the vital role that individuals, families, service providers, and governments play in creating safe and supportive environments for older adults.
People are encouraged to wear purple on June 15 to show solidarity with older adults and to spark conversations about elder abuse prevention. If you suspect elder abuse or need support, contact our adult protection number 1-855-376-4957 or visit WEAAD – JMMSPA – Canada and Adult Protection – Families and Affordability for more information.
