The Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Families and Affordability and Minister Responsible for the Status of Persons with Disabilities, is thanking leaders and organizations in the disability community for a productive round of consultations to help inform the creation of a Newfoundland and Labrador disability advocate.

Conversations with the community over the past number of week covered how the role, mandate and structure of an Office of the Disability Advocate could be tailored to uniquely suit the needs of persons with disabilities in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Organizations stressed the importance of ongoing consultation with persons with lived experience and taking adequate time to inform the creation of this new advocate’s office within the province.

Further meetings are currently being scheduled and Minister Davis will be consulting with additional organizations. Individuals or groups wishing to provide a written submission can send their feedback to disabilitypolicy@gov.nl.ca.

Following consultations with the disability community, the Department of Families and Affordability will review the feedback and begin the process of drafting legislation for the creation of a Newfoundland and Labrador disability advocate.
