While today’s fire suppression activities on the wildfire impacting Chance Harbour were effective, residents and cabin owners are advised that tomorrow’s forecasted north-northwest winds have the potential for heavy smoke and fire growth towards the communities of Jamestown and Winter Brook.
Cabin owners in the Great Chance Harbour area are advised to leave their cabins by mid-morning Wednesday out of an abundance of caution.
While it is unlikely that the wildfire will threaten communities directly at this time, the residents of Jamestown and Winter Brook should be prepared to evacuate quickly, if necessary.
Residents and cabin owners are asked to monitor official government sources for all updates.
Fire suppression efforts will continue with aerial suppression activities along the south and southeastern edge of the fire with three water bombers, a bird dog aircraft and helicopters. Favourable winds are forecasted starting Wednesday evening through to the weekend which will assist with suppression efforts.
The Provincial Emergency Operations Centre is currently activated to Level 1 – Enhanced Monitoring and continues to provide information to the affected communities and emergency management partners.
All residents of the province are reminded of the fire ban across Newfoundland and Labrador.
