Thanks to favourable weather and considerable fire suppression activity by ground crews, water bombers and helicopters, the Chance Harbour wildfire is now classified as Being Held. It remains at 1,820 hectares. Being Held means that sufficient action has been taken, and resources are in place to prevent any further spread of the fire.
With this change in status, Forestry officials will reopen a portion of the resource road commonly known as Chance Harbour Resource Road tomorrow. The outside check point will be repositioned at 9:00 a.m. Saturday July 26, 2025, at the foot of Brian’s Pond. Access will be reevaluated as fire suppression efforts continue.
A map of the area that will be open for access can be viewed here. Cabin owners are advised to consult this map prior to returning to their properties. Zones still marked red are not accessible.
Residents and cabin owners are reminded that this is still an active wildfire. Suppression efforts will continue with ground crews and air support working on hot spots. The fire burned deep and there are downed trees on the forest access road. More are anticipated to fall. We ask those accessing the road to please drive slowly and look out for fire personnel.
Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture thanks cabin owners and residents of Jamestown and Winter Brook for their continued patience and understanding during this wildfire.
