The Provincial Government continues to ensure available farmland is accessible for long-term agricultural use through a request for proposals process. This open, transparent and competitive process provides an opportunity for current and prospective farmers to apply and demonstrate their need for additional farmland.
Proposals submitted through this process must include a five-year farm development plan, a commercial farm business plan, and a pasture management plan (where applicable) describing the applicant’s proposed use of the land, with specific consideration for the site’s suitability for proposed agricultural development. Successful applicants will be eligible to acquire a long-term Crown lands agriculture title.
Proposals will be evaluated based on:
- Commercial viability.
- Applicant’s need for additional land.
- Degree to which the additional land will improve the viability of the existing farm operation.
- Management and use of the applicant’s existing land base (if applicable).
- Markets/quotas available to the farm.
- Proximity of the land to the applicant’s farm, if applicable.
- Proposed management and use of additional land.
Nineteen parcels of farmland totaling nearly 3,000 acres in western, central and eastern Newfoundland are listed in the backgrounder below. For more information on the Request for Proposals application process, visit Requests for Proposals – Land for Agriculture.
