A recent investigation conducted by the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture’s Resource Enforcement Division has resulted in charges against two individuals for netting Atlantic salmon.
On July 7, 2025, Resource Enforcement Officers observed a gillnet attached to a wharf in coastal waters near the community of King’s Point. The net appeared to be set to obtain Atlantic salmon. Officers conducted surveillance on the net until the following morning during which they observed two individuals retrieving the net using a boat.
Officers placed the two men under arrest for being in contravention of the Fisheries Act. Charges have been laid for setting fishing gear during a closed time, fishing for salmon by means of a net, and possession of salmon caught in contravention of the Fisheries Act.
The investigation also led to the seizure of a boat, net, and 10 Atlantic salmon. One salmon was alive and released by officers. The individuals will appear at court in Grand Falls-Windsor at a later date.
The public is encouraged to report suspected illegal fishing activity, as information provided by the public plays a significant role in assisting investigations being carried out by Resource Enforcement Officers.
The public can report suspicious activity anonymously at any time by calling 1-877-820-0999. Anonymous reports can also be submitted online at www.stoppoaching.ca.
