Motorists on the Northern Peninsula are advised to use extreme caution on the roadway between Eddies Cove East, Cooks Harbour and the St. Anthony Airport, as well as St. Anthony to Main Brook (Routes 430 and 432).
A large portion of the St. Anthony caribou herd overwinters in this area. Recent observations indicate a significant number of animals using the roads at these locations. As winter approaches, more animals will be attracted to road salt on the roads, further increasing their vulnerability to traffic collisions.
Motorists in all areas of the province are reminded to:
- Scan both sides of the highway and encourage passengers to watch for caribou.
- Pay attention to caribou warning signs.
- Avoid driving at dusk and dawn when caribou are more common near highways.
- Reduce speeds when driving at night when caribou are more difficult to see.
