As spring cleanup activities get underway throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, the Provincial Government is reminding motorists of the importance of safely securing their cargo when transporting materials with their vehicles.
Under the Highway Traffic Act, the Cargo Securement Regulations require all motorists using a vehicle to transport cargo, debris or trash on a public roadway to ensure it is properly secured.
All loads must be contained, immobilized or secured in accordance with the regulations to prevent flying debris, which could obstruct the view of, or strike other motorists.
Unsecured loads also contribute significantly to unsightly litter along roadways and pollution of the environment, which can require costly clean-ups.
Failing to comply with the Cargo Securement Regulations can result in a range of outcomes, from a minimum fine of $120, to a maximum fine of $600. Fines apply to all vehicle types, not just commercial vehicles.
