The Provincial Government continues to make progress on a series of ambitious multi-year technology initiatives, reshaping how it interacts with residents and businesses in Newfoundland and Labrador. In the third year of a five-year, $50 million investment to modernize information technology assets, the province is working to meet the growing needs of the public and this investment is ensuring that the required technology is available 24/7, 365 days a year.

The Honourable Sarah Stoodley, Minister of Government Modernization and Service Delivery and Minister Responsible for the Office of the Chief Information Officer, will be available to speak to media today (Wednesday, July 23) about these initiatives in the West Block Lobby, Confederation Building, at 11:00 a.m.

The MyGovNL platform continues to evolve as the province’s digital front door. With over 400,000 registered users, it already supports services like MyHealthNL, the Early Learning Gateway, the Medical Care Plan (MCP), and Motor Registration.

The next version of MyGovNL will advance the platform even further – introducing functionality that allows users to interact not just as individuals, but as business entities. This expansion will start in the next year and will unlock a new suite of online services, specifically tailored to the needs of small businesses, entrepreneurs, organizations, and industry stakeholders.

A full redesign of the Provincial Government’s website is also underway, featuring enhanced accessibility, and a service-centric design that puts user needs first. Part of this redesign includes the launch of a new AI-powered chatbot on the website. This virtual assistant will help people navigate government services more easily, offering 24/7 support and intuitive guidance to help users find information quickly.

From renewing a MCP card to applying for Crown Lands, the province’s wide range of online services is designed to make it easier to connect with government. A campaign will launch next month showcasing the ease, convenience, and accessibility of online services.

A cornerstone of the Provincial Government’s work is the full replacement of key legacy computer systems. Modernizing this technology will enable and support more flexible service delivery across departments who provide services to residents and businesses such as Student Aid, MCP, Motor Registration and Fines Administration.

As artificial intelligence (AI) technology reshapes how services are delivered and how residents and businesses engage with governments, Newfoundland and Labrador is emerging as a public sector leader in the responsible adoption of AI technology. Province-wide training and awareness for public sector employees is underway, supported by a formal policy on the responsible use of AI.

The Provincial Government’s digital technology initiatives are part of its ongoing efforts to build technology resilience for 24/7, 365 availability and embrace technology for improved service delivery and engagement with residents and businesses in Newfoundland and Labrador.
