The Provincial Government continues to work closely with its community partners, including municipalities and law enforcement, to promote road safety and safe driving practices. To help create safer roads, a Budget 2025 investment of $3.9 million supports the launch of speed cameras in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Honourable Sarah Stoodley, Minister of Government Modernization and Service Delivery, and the Honourable Dr. John Haggie, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, today announced that the first three speed cameras have been installed, are operating and issuing tickets in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Two speed cameras are operating on Veterans Memorial Highway, one in each direction, and one speed camera is operating at the intersection of Waterford Bridge Road and Nottingham Drive in St. John’s. A fourth camera will be installed on Larkhall Street near Larkhall Academy and Leary’s Brook Junior High in St. John’s and will be operational for the start of the school year in September.
Locations were chosen based on available traffic data, and in consultation with the City of St. John’s, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and Jenoptik Smart Mobility Solutions (Jenoptik). Announced in April, Jenoptik is the vendor responsible for the installation, operation and maintenance of speed cameras and the issuing of tickets.
Rollout of the speed camera program will take place in stages. The first stage includes 10 speed cameras on provincial and municipal roads and highways throughout the province, beginning with the four announced today. As the program expands, cameras will be installed in construction and school zones, and at traffic light-controlled intersections. Cameras will also be installed on the stop arms of school buses, which will detect vehicles passing school buses when they are stopped with the stop arm extended.
Quotes
“Speeding is a major problem in Newfoundland and Labrador. We know, throughout the country, speed cameras have proven to be an effective tool in helping to deter speeding, improve road safety, and protect the travelling public. With the first three speed cameras now operating and issuing tickets, we’ll continue to work closely with municipalities and law enforcement to expand and build on this program to ensure safer roads and safer communities.”

“Road safety is one of our top priorities, and the use of image capturing enforcement is an effective public safety tool we can use to deal with the issue. We want these cameras to be a deterrent, to remind drivers to slow down, respect speed limits, and protect one another.”

“I am pleased that one of the first speed cameras installed in the province is located near St. Mary’s Elementary in the District of Waterford Valley.
