The Provincial Government and NL Health Services are expanding services available on the MyHealthNL app with the addition of self-referral forms for breast cancer and colon cancer screening.

The Honourable Krista Lynn Howell, Minister of Health and Community Services, Minister Responsible for Mental Health and Addictions, and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services, announced the expansion at the Health Innovation Acceleration Centre in St. John’s. Minister Howell was joined by Dr. Pat Parfrey, CEO, Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services.

Breast cancer screening is available for individuals aged 40–74. Colon cancer screening is available for individuals aged 50–74.

Following self-referral through the MyHealthNL app, eligible residents will receive either an appointment letter in the mail or a follow-up call from the Cancer Screening Program. Once screening has been completed, a result letter will be available in the app and a paper copy sent via mail. Residents who are ineligible for screening will receive an ineligibility letter in the MyHealthNL app.

The expansion continues the Provincial Government’s commitment to transforming the health system based on recommendations from Health Accord NL, including optimizing and developing cancer screening programs. Allowing residents to self-refer via the app means that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have an additional way to easily access preventive care and can receive timely guidance and follow-up information.

This expansion is in addition to the services currently available on the MyHealthNL app, including:

  • Laboratory results
  • Medical imaging reports
  • Pathology reports
  • Cytology reports
  • A two-year history of medications dispensed from community pharmacies
  • Allergy information
  • Visit history
  • Symptom checker
  • Health library
  • Direct links to resources such as Bridge the gapp.

New users can register for the MyHealthNL app by:

  • Downloading the app on mobile devices on the Apple and Google Play app stores.
  • Logging in to MyGovNL.
  • Clicking Personal Health Record.
  • Submitting the registration form.
  • Entering the activation code sent via mail.

A demonstration video of the MyHealthNL app is available online.

Quotes
“The MyHealthNL app expansion makes it easier for residents to self-refer for cancer screenings and receive their results in a timely manner. Having access to results improves residents’ ability to self-manage chronic conditions and monitor medications and to have more informed and meaningful discussions with their health care providers. Residents are reminded to follow instructions provided by their health care provider. I encourage everyone eligible to sign up for the app and explore its services.”
