Residents of Newfoundland and Labrador are reminded that on September 1 the shingles vaccine will be available for no cost to all individuals aged 50 years and over.
This change follows a previous expansion on June 1, 2025, to include residents aged 65 and over and immunocompromised residents between the ages of 50-64.
The increased access to the shingles vaccine will:
- Help improve the health and well-being for more residents in the province.
- Ensure high-risk populations receive protection against shingles and its related health complications.
- Reduce hospital visits, physician consultations and pain management treatments.
The expansion aligns with recommendations from Health Accord NL to support older adults to age well with dignity and autonomy, and to expand access to shingles and pneumonia vaccines for seniors. It also meets the recommendation of the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) to offer shingles vaccine to individuals aged 50 and older.
Shingles is a painful localized rash caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, which remains dormant after an individual has had chickenpox. Shingles can cause persistent longstanding pain in the area of the rash and can lead to severe health complications in those who are immunocompromised. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent shingles and its associated health risks.
Eligible individuals are encouraged to contact their local pharmacy, physician, or a Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services public health office to confirm participation in the provincial vaccination program and for vaccine availability.
