The House of Assembly is advising of a call for expressions of interest from current and former Members to purchase a decommissioned seal leather chair.
The chairs, used for Members’ seating in the House of Assembly Chamber for 30 years, were retired in 2021 due to significant deterioration beyond repair and for ergonomic reasons.
The House of Assembly Management Commission has directed the decommissioned chairs be disposed of as follows:
- An expression of interest for the sale of the chairs be extended to current and former Members elected during the time the chairs were in use – February 1991 to November 2021.
- The sale price is set at $250 plus HST per chair, its appraised value, based on the historical significance and uniqueness.
- Conditions of the sale of the chairs will be on an as is, where is basis (i.e., the chair in its current condition, with all existing faults).
- Chairs will be randomly assigned to purchasers; there will not be an opportunity to choose a particular chair.
If there is more interest than chairs following the expression of interest, a random draw will be conducted. Chairs must be picked up at the Confederation Building.
Former and current Members elected during the time the chairs were in use (as noted above) interested in purchasing a decommissioned seal-leather chair must confirm by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 6, 2025 at clerkhoa@gov.nl.ca.
As directed by the Management Commission, if there are chairs remaining following the initial expression of interest to current and former Members, there will be a further expression interest for the public.
