The Honourable John G. Abbott, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, is today announcing that a contract has been awarded to Brook Construction (2007) Inc. to begin construction on six homes in Corner Brook. The contract, valued at $2.6 million, will cover the construction of six new one-bedroom homes.

This multi-unit building will feature three second-level and three ground-level units. One ground-level unit will be fully accessible, with level no-step entry and a fully wheelchair accessible kitchen and bathroom. All units will include universal design features such as widened exterior and interior doors and hallways, lever-type door handles and faucets.

It is expected that construction will start in the coming weeks, with a completion deadline of July 2026. This is the beginning of the construction phase for 50 units to be built in western Newfoundland and follows demolition and abatement work in the Crestview area this past fall.

While a tender for all 50 units was originally issued in October 2024, there were no successful bidders through that process. NLHC subsequently moved forward with a smaller tender for six units and plans to issue further tenders starting this fall to continue moving this work forward.

The Provincial Government continues to advance affordable housing construction through a combination of public and private construction projects. Government has announced more than 100 NLHC homes will be built in western Newfoundland, central Newfoundland and Labrador West by 2028. In addition, the Affordable Rental Housing Program is supporting the construction of approximately 700 affordable rental units, with completed construction on 63 homes in seven communities and work underway on 185 homes in 16 communities.
